Outside. Everything about it delights me. Practically all of my fondest childhood memories happened outside. There's the night we stretched out on the summer grass in the front yard to stargaze. The silly campfire games and hijinks while camping. The icky but rewarding fishing trips. Heck, even the outdoor chores were a thrill. The common thread in all these childhood adventures? Dad.
My dad grew up in Australia, just on the edge of the rugged outback. So you can imagine he's a rough and tumble kind of man. I grew up, thanks to a balanced influence from mom and dad, a bit of a tomboy, so most of my free time was spent in trees or knee deep in ponds or begging my dad to go fishing or camping. He always obliged.
The images that flash in my mind as I try to recall every outdoor moment always include a few things: a campfire. A coffee mug. A lunch box turned tackle box. Maybe some sparklers if we were lucky. And dad.
Here's my homage to dad and outdoor adventuring. Thanks, dad, for being a great influence and role model. Now, in my adulthood living in the Bay Area, I'm proud to say I'm carrying on our outdoor tradition!
